Sheffield Sharks defeat Leicester Riders in tense final

Sheffield Sharks claimed for the BBL Trophy for just the second time in their history with a 71-69 victory over Leicester Riders at the Emirates Arena.

BJ Holmes was successful with a pair of free throws with ten seconds to play to clinch the Sharks their third piece of silverware in the past four seasons.

Holmes finished as the game's MVP, adding seven rebounds and three assists to go alongside his 25-point haul, 11 of which came in the first quarter.

He was well supported by 15 points and seven rebounds from Demetrius Jemison, while Jay Couisnard top-scored for the beaten Riders with 21 points.

Leicester - who currently top the league table - had previously beaten the Sharks on four occasions this season.

However, Sheffield crucially held their opponents scoreless for a six-minute period late in the game, meaning at one stage they led 65-53 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Riders made a massive final push with a 13-2 run with the help of eight points for Zaire Taylor. A three-pointer from Jorge Calvo with 1.18 to play then tied the game at 69.

Jamall Anderson and Cousinard then both missed chances to put the favourites ahead before Holmes held his nerve at the free-throw line, meaning Sheffield take home the trophy for the first time in 15 years.
